What strikes me most today

St. Paul and all the subsequent missionaries - who risked their lives to make Jesus and His Gospel known to the world. If I love Christ as much as I say I do, shouldn't I be that willing to evangelize the world. I surely shouldn't hesitate due to fear of what others would think when so many missionaries suffered torture and death for standing up for Christ and the Gospel. I have a lot of work to live up to being the type of Christian I want to think I am!

The greeting is in my own hand, Paul's. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.

What strikes me most today

This is the very end of St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians. What struck me first was the quote about being sure to fulfill the ministry received from the Lord. I am always wondering if I am doing God's will, living my life how He wants me to, and fulfilling the ministry of evangelization and living the Gospel that we are called to through our Baptism. I sometimes wish I would receive more explicit instructions for the right decisions to make on a daily basis - but I guess that could interfere with free will. In becoming more like Christ and trying to think in a WWJD way, we are becoming more like Christ, more fulfilled, and more free.

While thinking of this, St. Paul throws us the left hook of "Remember my chains," realizing that the right decisions are not always going to be the easy ones. How can we do this? "GRACE!" So he finishes with "Grace be with you."

It just amazes me that such perfect writings by St. Paul were written nearly 2000 years ago and are just as true today as they ever were.

Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

What strikes me most today

Today's passage made me realize that most of my prayers are prayers of petition - I'm asking for something. I try to remember to pray a prayer of thanksgiving - when I get what I want. But I really should be praying prayers of thanksgiving the most. I have the life that God gave me and the lives God gave my family and friends. He certainly didn't have to create us or the world we live in - but He did. And because He gave us life, we will live for all eternity. Maybe I'll be more likely to spend that eternity in Heaven if I'm a little more grateful and spend more time thanking God for this life and all that's in it.

What strikes me most today

"abounding in thanksgiving." So my oldest son told us he would be unable to come home for Labor Day weekend, but my daughter surprised us by driving to Columbia, MO by herself and bringing him home - I'm glad I didn't know she was doing this until she was back home safely!

It was awesome having him home for the weekend, but today I had to say goodbye again. He drove there, and my 15 year old drove home (he has his permit.)

I was feeling a little sorry for myself that my kids are getting older, and therefore I am getting older. Then I realized I really should be thankful. Kids are meant to grow up, and so are we. Then I started thinking about all I had to be thankful for, starting with the gift of life itself God gave me and my family - we certainly did nothing to deserve it, but how awesome that God has given us life!

I need to focus on the blessings in my life; just meditating on those as my son drove me home from Mizzou made me much less anxious about all the details of my life - even his driving!

What strikes me most today

the idea that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are in the person of Jesus Christ. Our faith is not just a set of beliefs --> it is the Truth of the person Jesus Christ, Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. His bride is the Church He founded when He handed the Keys of the Kingdom to St. Paul. And here in today's reading we have St. Paul passing on this Truth to us.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

What strikes me most today

OK, first, just reading the word firstborn, I have to admit I thought of my firstborn who is now away at college. Today's picture is my youngest daughter with him. She misses him terribly. She was so excited this morning when she received an e-mail from him, telling her how much he missed her.

I also thought of my college son in the rest of the reading today. God is our Creator - he made the world where kids are attending college just as He made the world we raised our children in and continue to live in. That realization is such a comfort to a parent - God made the part of the world my son is in now, and God is just as present to my son there as He was here at home.

What an awesome God!

What strikes me most today

OK, so maybe everything I am reading now makes me thinking of my son moving away to college. But if you reread the lines above, I really think it fits. My son is a young man. He's ready to move into a dorm, make decisions and choices (all right choices, I'm hoping, even though all the choices I made certainly weren't perfect!) So what is there left for me to do? First --> pray for him. Second --> be ready to give him good advice based on mistakes I've made and learned from. Thirdly --> try to be ready with financial support as needed. (I wonder if his order of these 3 would be the same as mine?)

As St. Paul says to the Colossians, our family says to our son, "We do not cease praying for you..."

What strikes me most today

Jeff Jr is packing up for college. Elizabeth is next - about to start her senior year and looking at colleges.

As we pack Jeff up, we come across so many old memories and photos. The photo above is our two oldest after they snuck into a bag of M&M's (which are supposed to only melt in your mouth, not in your hands or around your mouth!). We didn't find out until we wondered why they went to brush their teeth on their own without being asked.

They had had their own little party. I remember this evening well - they were so happy, just rejoicing in the chocolate stash they had discovered. And it was good to see them happy and rejoicing. They were and are the kindest children (OK, young man and young woman) you could hope to meet. And they were loving the present moment and enjoying their lives - the lives that are God's greatest gift to them. God wants us to be happy in this world and the next. And that is precisely my prayer for them. Happiness now and in Eternity - for all of us! Rejoice! The Lord is near!

The Biggest Loser - Daris, age 25 - 346 to 178 pounds!

Philippians 3:18-21

For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ.

Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their "shame." Their minds are occupied with earthly things.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.

What strikes me most today

The Biggest Loser is my wife's favorite show. I believe this show is so popular because we can relate to letting parts of our life get out of control. Today's reading reminds me of this - especially verse 19 above - read that one above again. Ouch! Unfortunately, I can relate to that. Too often I overeat, especially when stressed. What if instead of eating ice cream or pie or pretzels or chips and salsa or leftovers, what if I said a Divine Mercy Chaplet - it would take the same amount of time, but be good for my body and soul rather than bad to both, and no guilt! I usually have trouble sticking to ideas like that, but I'm going to remember that I can choose to turn to my God, my faith, the Church and Her teachings and practices (maybe even actually fasting one day - and not just eating two really large meals so the 3rd will be smaller!) If I prefer to be weak and give in to the temptation of overeating, I am acting like those in verse 18, who "conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ." Big time OUCH!!!

In fact, I'm stressed enough that a Divine Mercy Chaplet may be too quick - I'm going to go pray a Rosary. We can also offer up sacrifices (like not eating late and praying a Rosary) for any intentions - I'm going to offer mine tonight for my children - that they grow ever closer to Christ, especially the one whose moving out to go to college in 6 days! Wow, thinking of that usually calls for about a pound of dry roasted cashews - I better start those Luminous Mysteries right away! Gotta go! Good night!

"so that... I may have less anxiety."

What strikes me most today

The word "anxiety" jumped out at me as I finished the 2nd chapter of Philippians. I do get nervous/anxious about confession - so I went to a new priest this weekend. He was great - he told me none of the things I wanted to hear and all the things I needed to hear. And although I don't picture myself as an anxious person, the ways I deal with stress could be better (and at least he told me most people sin more when they are stressed - e.g. overeating, drinking, losing temper, withdrawing and ignoring family and loved ones, avoiding mass and prayer, etc.)
So I am hitting the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplets now - trying to make them a habit - hopefully to decrease stress and anxiety, and give me alternate ways to deal with them when I need to.
And I really hate going back and telling the same sins over and over... so I really am going to try!

Do everything without grumbling or questioning.

What strikes me most today

I'm on call this week. There are 8 physicians in my group, so every 8th week we each take call for a week at a time. This is my week. That means that in addition to working all day, I can be called in at any time of night for emergencies. It is mostly the unknowing of how many phone calls and how many emergencies each day and night will bring that makes it so stressful.

So as this evening kept getting busier, I found myself grumbling and questioning (that's why this passage stuck out to me this evening).

I need to be more like Marcus Welby, MD (Robert Young), or his young partner Steven Kiley, MD (James Brolin). What a great show that was (Elena Verdugo as Consuela was one of my first crushes!)

I recall them absolutely loving the opportunity to help others. They did have times they were tired and frustrated and anxious - but what great docs they were. I need to offer up any fatigue or stress or anxiety for those who are suffering much more than I am.

I don't think God could have spoken any plainer to me than the words of Philippians 2:14. So I'll try to get back to post throughout the week - but "without grumbling or complaining!"

Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,

each looking out not for his own interests, but (also) everyone for those of others.

What strikes me most today

Regarding others as more important than ourselves. I just finished reading the book, Man of God: Young at Heart (The Life of Blessed Timothy Giaccardo). He was the first priest of the Society of St. Paul, and vital to the early Pauline life. However, he was willing to offer his life as a sacrifice to help the Pious Disciples of the Divine Master to gain Papal approval. He died on January 24, 1948, just days after the Pious Disciples received the Papal Decree of Praise (This was January 12, 1948, just after Blessed Timothy celebrated his last Mass.) Although he was so important, he regarded the Sister Disciples more important, offering his life for them. What an inspiration for us!

What strikes me most today

As I read the rest of the first Chapter of Philippians, the above passage stood out the most for me. As I try to advance on my journey to eternity with the Blessed Trinity, I am sometimes surprised that bad things still happen in my work and home life; mortgages, tuitions, and other bills just keep pouring in, and life is just not perfect liked I had hoped it would be! It reminded me of St. Theresa of Avila, who I remember writing about how even the closest relationship with God will not prevent us from suffering in this life. She is one of my favorite writers to quote (FYI Sr. Julia Darrenkamp, fsp, is the one who has taught me to LOVE quotes - she always finds the BEST!)

Below are some of my favorite quotes of St. Theresa of Avila that demonstrate what I mean:

“Let nothing disturb thee; Let nothing dismay thee; All thing pass; God never changes. Patience attains All that it strives for. He who has God Finds he lacks nothing:God alone suffices.”

What strikes me most today

This reminds me of Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body. And speaking of TOB, the TOB Congress in Philadelphia has been sold out with a waiting list, and all the speakers are getting fantastic reviews. This evening, awards were presented - and the Daughters of St. Paul were honored for their service and dedication in spreading the messages of Theology of the Body using all means of media and social communication to the world. Sr. Helena Burns, FSP, gave one of the talks at the conference. Congratulations to the Daughters of St. Paul, and you for your efforts to increase our "knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that [we] may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ."

What strikes me most today

Two of my sons and I "began a good work" several years ago and we are trying to complete it. We are trying to see baseball games at all 30 major league stadiums. We just returned from a road trip to Atlanta, Miami, and Tampa. We are up to 22 stadiums now; we have 8 more to go (God willing). It's a great father-son time to share just spending time together traveling and seeing baseball games. The long car rides seem to be the times we talk the most. It's awesome. And we are confident that we can complete this good work (hopefully before they go off to college!)

What strikes me most today

Wow! This one came at a good time. I need my son (the independent-I-don't-need-parental-interference-anymore-about-to-be-a-college-freshman) to read this. I feel a little guilty because I always thought I'd be a little sadder when my first-born was getting old enough to move out. Uh-uh! I'm as ready as he is. Maybe God implants a timed device in teens to make them push every button and press every rule in the weeks leading up to dorm life - perhaps to ease the separation. If so --> it works!
I know there will be times I will miss him, and I hope there will be times he might even miss me.
Maybe a day will come when he doesn't think I'm a mean-arbitrary-dictator living only to find ways to make his life miserable. Who knows, he could even ask my advice or appreciate me some day. My head spins trying to imagine such a day!
No matter what, I will continue to pray for him daily. I realize the world is a tough place for kids to grow up these days. As difficult as society makes it for faith-filled young men and women - he really is turning into a great young man. I pray he continues to grow in his relationship with Christ into adulthood and whatever God has in store for his future!

What strikes me most today

Today's reading made me think of Pope John Paul the Great. As the Vicar of Christ, I could imagine he would relax and take it easy and enjoy being Pope. But this Holy Father prayed 8 hours every day - FOR US! He only slept 4 hours each day. He wrote a lot (as we all know, I haven't caught up on reading his encyclicals; I can only imagine how long it take to write them - not to mention his awesome Theology of the Body). The point is that he saw the Church as a bride - and he loved her - meaning he sacrificed all for her.

May I sacrifice for my wife and for Christ and His Church the way Pope John Paul II demonstrated for us.

What strikes me most today

Today's passage reminded me of the movie The Miracle Worker, starring Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft.

Helen Keller grew up learning about the world around her without being able to see it. That is how I should be in my faith life - always working to get closer to the Blessed Trinity, even though I can't see them and the whole concept of One God in Three Persons is not that easy to grasp - but with faith I can accept it.

What strikes me most today

I remember Star Wars making such an impression on me, not just for what seemed like unbelievably great special effects, but for our choice between good and evil in this world. Jesus has brought us the light. We can choose to live as children of light, bringing goodness, righteousness, and truth. This will be pleasing to the Lord, and the key to our own happiness in this life and the next.

To be honest, it's a little scary to read that no immoral or impure or greedy person has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. My first thought is that no one can even attempt to live such a life. But then I look at the happy faces of Blessed James Alberione and Blessed Timothy Giaccardo - and I know it can be done - I need to be like the Nike commercial and Just Do It!

What strikes me most today

Ozzie and Harriet! Now there was good family entertainment - happy, talented, respectful kids. Good ratings even without obscenities, silly or suggestive talking, and no need for sexual suggestiveness or demeaning women (or dads, who appear like clueless idiots in much TV today).

I give thanksgiving for this great TV show. I wish this was the kind of TV my kids were growing up on!

What strikes me most today

I can't help thinking about Ralphie in A Christmas Story, after he accidentally dropped the F-bomb. I loved his descriptions of the various bars of soap he tasted over the years. So, even though there's little chance of Mom putting soap in my mouth now, I still need to remember to stick to language that can impart grace to those who hear - which is not only avoiding cussing, but also completely avoiding talking bad about anyone else.

Today's writing reminds me of an episode of Little House on the Prairie called The Collection- When Reverend Alden gets sick while collecting donations, and ex-convict named Caleb Hodgekiss (played by Johnny Cash), offers to get the donations from Walnut Grove for him. Caleb plans to keep the money himself, but he decides to do the right thing when he sees how nice the people of Walnut Grove are. He no longer stole, but began to do honest work with his own hands and shared with those in need.

What strikes me most today

Today's reading reminded me of Harry Potter. People are afraid to utter Voldemort's name, except for Harry. Professor Dumbledore encourages this by telling Harry that the truth conquers fear.

Too often in today's world we rationalize sin and sinful behavior. Lies, anger, sinning are easy traps to fall into - but we must realize the truth that these all separate us from God and makes room for the devil. That's why we must be honest with ourselves and with others, and we must not leave room for the devil.

What strikes me most today

"tricking" and "scheming" This reminds me of The Patty Duke Show. Now here was a girl who could trick and scheme, taking advantage of her cousin's physical similarities. I think St. Paul is telling us today to mature beyond this stage, to "attain the full unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God." In this way, we can know, and then share with the world, Jesus the Divine Master, the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

What strikes me most today

Christ giving different gifts to different people, and grace given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. This one reminds me of the Flying Nun. She was given a special gift. Although I don't personally know anyone who has been given the gift of flight, I know many people who have other awesome gifts that bring me closer to Christ.

(Those kinds of gifts are better than flying any day!)

What strikes me most today

"to accomplish far more that all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us." This makes me think of Lucy Ricardo and all her schemes, imagination, and dreams. Why are we always wanting more? Why are we always searching? Why are we never satisfied?

St. Augustine got it right - God created our hearts, and our hearts are restless until they rest in God!

God grant eternal rest to Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley for the years of fun, love, and laughter they gave us! Amen.

What strikes me most today

When I hear family, I still think Brady Bunch! It was a different family, and I'm not sure if Mike and Carol were divorced or widowed from their first spouses, but they made a family. And though the Brady's were not perfect, the family members were grateful to be part of a family. Likewise, we should be grateful for the families we come from - we wouldn't be alive without the miracle of life God allowed our parents to participate in. For this life and the hope of eternal life with God, "I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named."

What strikes me most today

OK, since I've been into pop culture/old TV shows, the first prisoner who comes to mind is Otis the Drunk from Mayberry RFD. In no means am I comparing St. Paul to Otis. Rather, we are all like Otis in some way. He has his demons, as we all must deal with in our own lives. Whether alcohol, overeating, talking badly about people, impure thoughts, immoral actions, or whatever, we try to avoid sin, but too often find ourselves taking the prison keys off Barney Fife's desk and admitting we have fallen again. What hope do we have: God's grace!

(Even now, I'm afraid if I came face to face with one of Aunt Bee's homemade blueberry pies, I would not be able to practice moderation!)

What strikes me most today

"So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners." This reminds me of those poor officers and passengers on the Starship Enterprise, forever strangers and sojourners in this big world! What were they looking for? They wanted to find a planet suitable for life to replace Earth. What are we looking for? A place to spend Eternity in peace and happiness --> in other words, Heaven.

How scary for the crew of the Starship Enterprise if they never find what they are looking for.

How much scarier for us if we never find what we are looking for - at least we know the answer to our journey - His name is Jesus!

What strikes me most today

He came and preached peace. This reminds me most of Kung Fu starring David Carradine. His character really was like the apostles, traveling from place to place. He really did try to teach peace, though he could pull out the Kung Fu when needed!

Peace to those far off and those who are near. I tend to relate many things to old TV shows. This one reminded me of "Lost in Space." No matter how far off the Robinson family got, they still loved and cared for one another (except for Dr. Smith, whom I quote: "Yours not to question why; yours to do as I say or die." - not the most Christian!) Even when they were lost in space, they all still had access in one Spirit to the Father.

What strikes me most today

"abolishing differences," "breaking down the dividing wall of enmity," "He is our peace."

I think back to early lessons of getting rid of differences between people. The first lessons I remember were from George and Weezy Jefferson. They showed us how wrong it was to treat people differently just because of skin color. Even after being financially successful with his own dry cleaning business, the Jeffersons were still treated differently because they were African American. It became obvious that others were treated differently for a variety of reasons (disabilities, poverty, physical appearance, nationality, etc.) "Through his flesh" and "through the cross" we can become one body in Christ!

What strikes me most today

What strikes me is the idea of becoming closer. There is usually some sacrifice that makes us feel closer to others - our parents who gave us life and sacrificed so much for our benefit; spouses, friends, and extended family/neighbors/co-workers who watch out for us and help us on our journey. It reminds me of George Bailey in It's A Wonderful Life. He sacrificed so often and so freely - saving his brother from drowning, giving up his personal wealth to save his neighbors, and jumping in after Clarence, the drowning Guardian Angel. George Bailey helps me understand how we "who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ" - the greatest sacrifice of all!

What strikes me most today

The immeasurable riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. How much we love God and God loves us was very evident to me when I witnessed Sr. Emi Magnificat renewing her vows. She has been an awesome witness for me because she does not live a life of suffering and sacrifice and misery - she is one of the happiest, joy-filled, fun-loving person I know. She has taught me that God wants us to be happy on Earth and in Eternity. If we try our best to take part in the Sacraments and grow in our relationship with the Blessed Trinity through Christ and His Church, we will find that joy in this world and the next.

What strikes me most today

The Church is the body of Christ. We have to remember this. I've just started reading the book Fatherless by Brian Gail. I'm not very far in it, but the main character is a good young priest dealing with the human members who make up the Church on earth. But the book already tries to make clear that the Church is Christ's Church, His body, even though it must be run by very human people. So, even when mistakes are made, it does not decrease the reality that the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is the Body of Christ.

I love the idea that we were chosen and destined. It reinforces the sanctity of all human life. I love the Umbert the Unborn Cartoons. I posted one of my favorites above. From conception to natural death, all life exists for the praise of God's glory!

What strikes me most today

The idea of "the world being crucified to me" is what strikes me most today. It is so easy for me to become caught up in worldly things. I know that this life on Earth is so incredibly brief when compared with Eternity. I also know that God wants us to enjoy this life - but that enjoyment has to be a joy-filled existence moving toward God. If it is too worldly and pleasure-seeking and self-centered, I risk moving away from the God who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life - and jeopardize my salvation. The times I have chosen Christ have been the times I do find real joy and even true freedom. Then there are times I thought I was seeking freedom by doing what I wanted even though it went against a Commandment or Church teaching, and I could see that was ultimately leading to slavery and death. Even the cross seems like something to avoid, but that is where we find Christ. I certainly don't search out crosses in my life - enough come along with being human. But when crosses come along, I try to embrace it as Christ did and offer it up for Christ - it makes those crosses easier to bear, and clarifies the picture of Heaven just down the road!

What strikes me most today

"let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith." This is why I love being a Pauline Cooperator and doing what I can to help the Daughters of St. Paul and all the Pauline Family. I receive much more from them than I can ever offer them. Right now, they are praying a Novena to St. Paul for all of our intentions. The video above is less than 6 minutes, but it is worth the time - Sr. Julia and Sr. Anne are singing Novena prayers to St. Paul on our behalf.

This quote seems perfect for Father's Day - After I became a father, I realized just how much my dad loved me and sacrificed for me, and bore my burdens for me as much as he could. He was a great example of Fatherhood for me!

Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.

What strikes me most today

Envy. Jealousy is such an easy trap to fall into. We all have crosses to bear, so we assume others have it much better than we do. I remember a priest saying that we shouldn't compare ourselves to others, because God doesn't compare us to others - we should focus on our own personal relationship with God. Even at our Judgment, there's no comparing, like "I'm not as bad as _______."

John Lennon's song "Jealous Guy" reminds me of how foolish it is to be jealous. He apologizes in the song for hurting someone due to jealousy. And I think how short John Lennon's life was. No matter how long a life we are given, I need to avoid wasting time on jealousy!

For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want.

What strikes me most today

I heard a talk by Sr. Helena Burns last year, and I finally got TOB (Theology of the Body). In the context of TOB, St. Paul's words in Galatians 5:17 now make total sense to me. In the past I would have read this as flesh=body=bad and Spirit=soul=good. But God didn't create us as good souls trapped in bad bodies; He created us as individuals - body and soul. THAT is who we are. So now I see the Spirit as the Spirit of God, representing purity, agape, and gift. This Spirit of Christ did not turn me against or away from sex, but encouraged it as an awesome gift within my marriage that resulted in Jeff Jr, Elizabeth, John, Tom, and Anne Marie. The flesh, on the other hand, is the tendency that we (body and soul) can have to use sex as a selfish, self-serving, lifeless act, completely opposed to the Spirit of the flesh. So St. Paul's message is that much more vital for us - because the flesh and the Spirit are directly opposed to one another, and the choice we make has consequences in this life and in Eternity.

In light of all this, what strikes me most today is: GIFT! Thank you, God, for Your AWESOME GIFT of LIFE!

What strikes me most today

What was St. Paul's physical illness? Was it the blindness? I always thought he did not start preaching until after his vision was restored. Perhaps his eyes still looked different? I have also heard people speculate that he may have stuttered or had a lisp or some other speech impediment, as he mentions his terrible speaking ability.

And was this thorn in his flesh the same thing as this physical illness? I'm trying to find out; does anyone have any thoughts or ideas or additional information?

What strikes me most today

I love the image of a child of God. It reminds me that all my worries about work, family, finances, etc. are all things I didn't worry about as a child, and if I'm a child of God, I really shouldn't be overly worried now - I just need to keep praying for God to be in charge and for me to listen (that's the hard part!)

By the way, does anybody else think this picture of Jesus looks a little like Andrea Bocelli (maybe it's just me because I really like Andrea Bocelli)!

Our faith is not a set of laws, it is a person, Jesus Christ, the Divine Master, the Way, the Truth, and the Life!!! Thank God!!!

2 things:

1. I printed all of Galatians 2:20 - the first half is the famous quote, but I really love the second half along with it.

2. I don't think I'll ever get a tattoo (like today's photo), but Galatians 2:20 would be a strong consideration if I ever decide to get one!

"Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ."

What strikes me most today

"Doulos" is the Greek word for a slave. And we know, we must serve someone. Whom will we choose to serve? Human beings in our life? Satan (whom we choose whenever we choose sin)? Or will we serve God? As for me, I choose to be a slave for Christ (which, ironically, gives us the greatest freedom when we choose this). We would be lost and miserable if we choose to serve human beings or Satan.

What strikes me most today

Geography! As I started reading Galatians, I thought I should look up this area on a map, so here it is. Then I read St. Paul talking about "the present evil age." Really? It just confirms for me that the Letters of St. Paul are just as important for our "present evil age" as they were for his!

"the God of love and peace will be with you." What a great thought. I love this picture giving us that image of being in a peace-filled meadow with a babbling brook with Jesus. That is worth any mending of ways and encouraging of others so we can all attain this!

What strikes me most today

I'm trying to think how to test myself. The best way I know is the Examination of Conscience I learned at the Jesuit High School I attended. And, at least as important, if Jesus Christ is in me, do I show this to others in my actions? If I am embarrassed to discuss, educate, and demonstrate Jesus to the world, I have failed the test!

What strikes me most today

"Superapostles!" OK, here's another thing I never remember reading in the Bible before, but I like it. I don't know if it's just me, or does everybody have this secret desire to be a superhero? For me, it's always been Batman. He's not from another planet, he doesn't have superhuman powers, and he's not indestructable. He's 100% human, and he knows it. But he sacrifices all for love of neighbor, to use his gifts for good, and to inspire others. I believe St. Paul was a "superapostle." So maybe my goal will be to be a cross between St. Paul and Batman!

2 Corinthians 12:7-9

That I might not become too elated, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated.

Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me,

but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness."

What strikes me most today

I'm thinking of the times bad things have happened in my life, or times when I thought God didn't answer my prayers, or He answered - but not in the way I wanted. Then I look at St. Paul who dedicated every second of every day to God - and he still was the recipient of a thorn in the flesh. I'm not sure what that thorn was, but St. Paul obviously didn't like it and wanted it removed, but God's answer was "no." I think the thorn is a direct reference to the "angel of Satan," but I'm not sure exactly how that angel worked in St. Paul's life. I think we are not told what St. Paul's specific "thorn" was so we can all relate with the various "thorns" we carry in our flesh.

Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is led to sin, and I am not indignant?

If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

What strikes me most today

I really like this modern day version of Doubting Thomas. I feel like doubts of all kinds that come up in life are a tremendous weakness for me. But St. Paul boasts of the things that show his weakness. Why? Because the world can see God's power more clearly when He speaks to us through a weak person, almost as clearly as if we were putting our fingers in the holes in His Sacred Body!

Five times at the hands of the Jews I received forty lashes minus one.

Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I passed a night and a day on the deep;

on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own race, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers;

in toil and hardship, through many sleepless nights, through hunger and thirst, through frequent fastings, through cold and exposure.

And apart from these things, there is the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches.

What strikes me most today

Sometimes it's good to be reminded how much St. Paul endured for the sake of the Gospel. And why do I at times hesitate to talk to people about Jesus - I'm a little worried I could be embarrassed or think I'm weird. That's just sad if that's why I don't tell more people about Christ and His Church!

2 Corinthians 11:1

"If only you would put up with a little foolishness from me! Please put up with me."

What strikes me most today

This is one of those passages I absolutely never remember hearing before. It just amazes me how you can read the Bible and come across lines that seem brand new. It seems that St. Paul really feels foolish at times, enough that he has to ask people to "please put up with me." This is why I love St. Paul so much. He can relate to feeling foolish when evangelizing. Last night (and early this morning - mass was at 3:30 this morning!) I had a conversation with 2 other parents about our faith (I think parents start to re-evaluate where they are in their life when children make these kind of milestones.) At first I felt a little foolish spilling my guts, and I had a fleeting thought of "please put up with me" long enough to realize that I'm sincere and trying to live my faith life the best I can. I am SO grateful for St. Paul leaving this message that I just happened to read the morning I needed to read it!

What strikes me most today

We just attended the Mass and Dinner for the Graduating Seniors at St. Louis University High School (from where my son is graduating). During the dinner, numerous awards and talks by administrators were given. EVERY speaker was so humble and spoke of the most important aspect of their education being a better understanding of God's love, and learning to live God's love in all aspects of their lives. There was no boasting about individual accomplishments - only boasting in the Lord!

God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.

What strikes me most today

Abundance of graces. I can't think of a time that God did not give me enough grace to perform a kindness for someone. Even when I was young and our family had very little, I remember watching The Waltons' The Homecoming with Patricia Neal and Richard Thomas. They were so poor at Christmas in the middle of the Depression, and it seemed there was a good chance that the kids' dad had been in an accident and might never come home. Even through that, there were so many acts of kindness by so many friends, neighbors, and family members toward one another. They were still able to share God's love with one another at a time when their very existence was in question. How much more of God's love should we who receive so much be able to share with one another!

He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.

What strikes me most today

Reaping and sowing. I actually think of raising kids more than plants. I just got done yelling at one of my sons for not cleaning his room (I should have posted a picture of how bad it is - you'd understand why I was yelling! The blue flower helps give the illusion that I'm a calmer dad, so I went with that!) Still, I should have stayed calmer and gently smiled and told him he's grounded until the room is clean and left it at that - instead I let him know how angry I am that he still hasn't cleaned his room. That's what I get out of today's passage - if what I'm "giving" is a lesson or example in parenting, I should not have done it with a grudge or feeling of necessity to make him listen - I could still have been an example of a "cheerful giver," so I do feel guilty. (But seriously, I'm pretty sure Blessed Mother Theresa might even lose her temper with him if she saw how bad this room is!)

What strikes me most today

Sorry, when I think of rich people, Lovey and Thurston Howell, III still come to mind! The richness we seek is not abundant wealth (although I still wouldn't mind winning the lottery!) But I think most people don't want to win the lottery or have abundant wealth to live a lavish, isolated, indulgent lifestyle - we do seek security for our families and others we care about and care for. I'd love to have money to donate to awesome charities. But most important is that money not be the focus of our lives - the focus has to be on Jesus! That is how we achieve the true wealth we truly want for us and our loved ones --> eternal life in Heaven!

Lining up for Confession

2 Corinthians 7:10

For godly sorrow produces a salutary repentance without regret, but worldly sorrow produces death.

What strikes me most today

OK, this one took me a while - I had a little tough time with "salutary repentance." Salutary means beneficial or wholesome. Death means... well, death! So focusing on worldly cares, concerns, and worries draw us away from God, leading to death. A godly sorrow makes us desire God all the more, so the way to make up for whatever godly sorrow we face, is to take advantage of the AWESOME gift of Reconciliation. If we realized how profoundly this Sacrament can affect our past, present, and future, we would all be lined up like the people in today's picture, to receive the salutary repentance that will eliminate our regrets!

What strikes me most today

The term "fear of God" used to bother me. I wondered how or why I would be attracted to a God I was afraid of. A priest explained that the term "fear" in the original text has different connotations than the modern English negative connotation, like servile fear. Instead, he said to think of it as "a fear of offending the Lord." And that makes sense in the context of today's passage - I should cleanse myself from every defilement of flesh and spirit, making holiness perfect so I will not offend God. I get it - now I need to live it!

The picture above is from Easter Sunday, I'm guessing 5 or 6 years ago. God says He is a father to us, and we shall be His sons and daughters. If it is true that God loves me even more than I love my children, maybe I will be OK after all!

What strikes me most today

I'm intimidated by the line, "we are the temple of the living God." God deserves the best of temples. I think that means I need to work on eating less, drinking less, and exercising more - oh yeah, and avoiding sin as much as possible. It's hard to find good motivation for all those things, but if I'm preparing a temple in which the Lord can dwell, I want it to be the best it can be (the best I can be!)

What strikes me most today?

I like the very last part, "as having nothing and yet possessing all things." The picture is of a man whose hands are empty, but they are reaching for God, and he is looking up to God. How rich the man in this picture looks to me as he appears to be living "all for God!"

What strikes me most today

I always have a hard time meditating on this passage - the same feeling I got watching Jesus scourged in the movie The Passion of the Christ. What if my sins added to the suffering Jesus endured, willingly endured, for me? It bothers me so much because it's not "what if," it is the reality of my Redemption. How do I repay someone for suffering so much to save me? It should be choosing God (who is all good) over sin (which is evil) in every choice I make in my life. Thank God (literally), He knows I'm not perfect, and He loves me anyway, loving me even more in my weakness and my feeble attempts at holiness. He even gave me the Sacrament of Reconciliation so I would have a means to easily repair the relationship that I keep damaging. What an awesome, loving, perfect God!

What strikes me most today

Reconciliation making the old things new. It reminds me of Jesus saying we must be like little children - for such ones make up the kingdom of Heaven. I love today's picture, especially Jesus inclining his ear toward the boy confessing - hearing his confession through His priest!

What strikes me most today

I would love to think we all will wind up in heaven - that hell is a threat that few if any really end up in. That's also what Satan would like us to believe; it is not what the Gospel teaches.

"We are always courageous... for we walk by faith, not by sight."

What strikes me most today

It struck me that St. Paul wrote, "We are always courageous" rather than we should always be courageous or we are sometimes courageous. Courage can be difficult - it usually entails making yourself vulnerable - either to the thoughts or words or actions of others, or even a soccer ball to a body part you'd rather not have as the receiving end of a penalty kick at close range! (But sometimes we are called to take one for the team!) So another thing for me to work on - I need to walk by faith and always be courageous (or at least I can try harder!)

For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.

For in this tent we groan, longing to be further clothed with our heavenly habitation

if indeed, when we have taken it off, we shall not be found naked.

For while we are in this tent we groan and are weighed down, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

What strikes me most today

This passage speaks to me about the daily stresses, the ups and downs in all our lives. Recently, there has been more good than bad in the daily chaos of my life. But I don't feel significantly calmer. I don't think I will ever feel completely at peace in this life - and maybe that's not a terrible thing. Good kids and healthy patients and not-too-scary-financial-worries are great, but they are not the fulfillment my soul longs for. That ultimate fulfillment can only come from God - The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As St. Augustine so clearly put it, "my soul is restless, until it rests in You."

What strikes me most today

God's abundant grace! When I read this I had the image of Niagara Falls - I visited there for the first time last summer. Expecting to be underwhelmed, I was blown away! The power and the force and the sheer unending volume pouring over the falls every second was incredible - yet less than a dripping faucet when compared to the mercy, love, and graces God pours out for those willing to accept them! What an awesome world God gave us; what an awesome God!

What strikes me most today

"I believed, therefore I spoke." Today's picture is of the Daughters of St. Paul setting up a sidewalk display to tell people about Jesus. Their words and actions clearly proclaim to the world, "I believed, therefore I spoke." How awesome is that?!

4 For God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of (Jesus) Christ.

5 But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.

What strikes me most today.

I always thought the "earthen vessels" in the St. Louis Jesuit songs was referring to the vessels that held the Blessed Eucharist. With the sentence before it, though, it sounds more like the earthen lamps used in the time of Christ. If so, maybe it is actually we who are supposed to be these lamps for the world. If the light of Christ can shine through mere creatures like us, it must be of God, since it could not be from us on our own, but Christ dwelling in us!
