Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
What strikes me most today
St. Paul was tough, and he doesn't mince words telling people to be men. St. Paul knew that being a disciple of Christ meant being a soldier. In this picture, we even get a preview of a similar message that St. Paul will be giving in Ephesians 6:10.
The picture we often get of Christian men is one of a quiet, reserved, always turn the other cheek wimpy guy. That is not the image St. Paul had or wants us to have; he wants us to be strong, committed, fearless fighters for our faith, our families, and most importantly, our Lord!

Is there some reason that you are not using the standard (NAB) translation? The Greek verb seems to indicate maturity as it can also indicate women of marriageable age.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for pointing that out. I have so much to learn about the Bible! I was just Googling different translations, and I'm even more confused now. A Revised Standard Version of today's passage reads: "13 Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love." I have to admit I really don't know which translations are better than others. The Bible I read at my house says it is NAB, so I'll try to stick to that one. I was on call at the hospital and didn't have it with me when I wrote today's entry, so I had to use another Bible source. Sorry for any confusion or problems that may have caused; that was certainly not my intention.
