Jesus the Good Shepherd
From the liturgy one easily understands how Jesus loved to be called the Good Shepherd, how he insisted on this word, on his own title: the Good Shepherd.
I am the Good Shepherd (Jn 10), and he repeats it. As the Good Shepherd he wants that there be only one shepherd and one flock.
In becoming man, the Lord Jesus, besides Mary and Joseph, invited the shepherds as his first visitors to the manger, and they were invited in a special way through the angels.
Before Jesus went away from the apostles, he gave Peter the power to guide the bishops and the faithful: "Feed my sheep" (Jn 21:17), "Feed my lambs" (Jn 21:15).
This means that he insisted on this thought: that the entire Church be one sheepfold, one flock. One flock which has one eternal Shepherd as guide.
What Strikes Me Most Today
OK, I have to go with the artwork above. I can read about the Good Shepherd, but I often still find myself feeling that God could not love a sinner like me - that He must be disappointed that I'm not leading a better life than I am. Then I look at how Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, loves the sheep in the sketch above, and I start to feel that God really could love me! Then I look at the nailmark in His hand, and I know He loves me!
What strikes you most today?
