Sts. Philip and James
Apostles
St. Philip, from Bethsaida of Galilee, was one of the first called to follow the Lord Jesus. He is one of the chosen twelve.
James the Less, son of Alphaeus, was also one of the twelve. It is believed that he later governed the Church of Jerusalem for many years.
Let us "confess" the doctrine of Jesus Christ by leading a holy life as the apostles did.
Mary, the Apostle
Mary's mission and vocation are essentially apostolic. She had a mission foretold by God in the earthly paradise. "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed: He will crush your head and you will lie in wait for his heel." Why was Mary created? Why was she preserved from original sin? Why was she adorned with so many gifts and privileges? For a purpose, that is, to be an apostle. Apostolate means helping people to reach salvation. And Mary gave everything to men when she gave Jesus. There will never be a greater apostle than Mary in the world!

Purify your love
Today we celebrate the feast of Sts. Philip and James. Philip used to ask Jesus rather ingenious questions which showed that he had understood very little of Jesus' teachings. Jesus once had to scold him: "How long have I been with you and haven't you known me?" (Jn 14:9).
It happens that one can fail to understand Jesus, in spite of being close to him, and one can even die without knowing him.
Where there is no humility the light of God cannot penetrate. Our self has to disappear, that is, our thoughts should disappear, and take those of Jesus. Have his mind.
Our desires and feelings should disappear because Jesus wants to put his in us; his heart in us.
Our entire will has to disappear, all our whims, all our actions that are too human, because Jesus wants to put his will in us.
And the true love of God consists in these three things.
What Strikes Me Most Today
I'm glad Philip asked a lot of questions. I feel better knowing that even after hanging around Jesus day after day and listening to every word He said and His explanations, Philip still didn't get it all. That makes me feel "not quite as bad" for the things I don't fully comprehend, and especially for the things I don't even know I don't know!
